Vandalism Hits Sabattus Cemetery

Police are looking for the person or persons who stole markers from the graves of two war veterans at Pleasant Hill Cemetery this week. Officials say the markers contained copper and were possibly stolen to sell the metal inside. The theft comes after someone in a black pickup truck drove across some of the gravesites on Memorial Day.

Named Approved for Proposed Merged City

The Lewiston-Auburn Joint Charter Commission voted unanimously on Thursday to call the combined city Lewiston-Auburn. The decision caps two months of discussion that ultimately pitted the Lewiston-Auburn name against the Great Falls moniker after nearly 1,000 suggestions were submitted. A public forum on the merger is scheduled for June 20 at CMMC.

Lincoln St. in Lewiston Testing Bicycle-Friendliness

Thursday was the start of a 2-3 week experiment on Lincoln St. in Lewiston. The annual Build Maine conference in Lewiston partnered with the Maine Dept. of Transportation to set up bollards and lay down paint to create lanes for pedestrians and bicycles separated from vehicle traffic. It is one of the first protected bike lane demonstrations in Maine.

Video Shows Toddler Standing in Front Seat of Moving Vehicle

A Skowhegan woman is the focus of social media outrage after a video surfaced Wednesday of her driving and talking on a cellphone while a toddler played in the passenger seat without a car seat or seatbelt. Investigators say they know the identity of the vehicle owner but, at latest check, have not filed any charges. An investigation is ongoing.

Jay Woman Pleads No Context to Child Molestation

Sentencing is set for June 30 after 44-year-old Tami Dalot pleads no contest to charges that she sexually abused a child under the age of 12. Dalot could face up to 10 years in prison. She was arrested in February 2015 along with her ex-husband and his girlfriend on similar charges.

Maine May Owe Feds $51M Over Treatment Center

At issue is the 2013 decertification of Riverview Psychiatric Center in Augusta due to overcrowding, inadequate staffing, and the use of tasers and corrections officers to deal with patients with mental illnesses. In a June 7 letter, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says it is recalling the money sent to the hospital between December 2013 to March of this year.

Maine's Largest Healthcare Provider Closer to Consolidation

Nine of MaineHealth's 10 members' boards of trustees approved a draft of the plan this week. The lone holdout is in New Hampshire and will vote in July. Officials said Thursday that public meetings will be set up in communities served by those member groups. Affiliate hospitals that are not full members are not affected, such as St. Mary's Health System in Lewiston.
